If you don’t know how to install a VPN on a router simply follow the step by step instruction and install it. You may watch this video or go through the article. It is your wish.
How to install a VPN on a router without modifying the firmware.
Usually, when we do this we must install a third-party firmware or operating system such as DD-WRT. But newer routers don’t require that which is a nice feature. Now the benefit of running a VPN on your router is that every device that connects to it will be secured. Also, there are devices such as the Xbox One, Apple TV, and Roku that currently don’t allow for a VPN protection but by setting up a VPN on a router those devices can now be protected. Since all traffic running through the VPN router will be encrypted.
Most VPN services such as IP vanish, Nord, PIA allow for a certain number of active connections at once through an account. With this VPN you can connect five to six devices simultaneously under one account. But by setting up a VPN connection on the router it only counts as one connection. So effectively you could be protecting dozens of devices that are connected to the VPN router with that one account.
I usually suggest installing the VPN application directly onto the device that you would like to protect such as the Fire TV, Fire TV Stick or Android box. But for the reasons previously mentioned you may want to do this on your router.
The Asus AC 3100 is one of the most powerful home routers on the market so it should work well with a VPN and we will test the speed once we get everything up and running.
The first thing is to follow the instructions that came with the router and set up your connection. It is the general/common process.
Two things I will be using for my working ..
- Asus AC 3100 Router
- IP Vanished VPN
You can use any well-known company router and top VPN for your use. Those are just an example.
Step 1 – Log in your routers admin page
First thing was going to do is open the router’s admin page and to do that all you have to do is open a browser on your computer and go to your router’s admin page. And now you will be asked to sign in with the username and password that you set up when you configured your router. Now you will see the administration page for the router.
Step 2 – Change the DNS address
Now change the DNS address and you can do that here under the LAN wide area network tab. Click that and where it says DNS settings. You’re going to click no on this. We do not want to connect to DNS server automatically.
Now you have the option to type in server addresses for the DNS server that you want to use. Use a new DNS service from Cloudflare, since they advertise both speed and more importantly privacy for this free service that they offer. So to use cloud flairs DNS server type in 18.104.22.168 DNS server one and 22.214.171.124 for DNS server two. if you would like to use the google DNS servers, they are 126.96.36.199 and 188.8.131.52.
Now you may wonder what a DNS server does?
A DNS server is a computer that contains a database of public IP addresses and their associated host names. So when we type in a website address into our browser the DNS server translates that into the IP address of the website you are looking for will load.
Now that we have these two DNS server addresses put into this area. Click the apply button and after that change, I suggest just opening another tab in your browser pulling open a website just to ensure that the changes did work properly.
Step 3 – Add profile
Go back into the control panel for the router. Scroll down and click VPN and click the tab that VPN client. Ok, this is the page where we can configure various servers that we want our router to connect to through the VPN service. We can set up multiple VPN servers. One might perform better than another.
So we can have multiple options in here and have the ability to choose which one we want to connect to.
Click add profile, click open VPN. Use open VPN in the first few profiles because it is the most secure protocol out of the three options. And the description you can put anything in here that you would like. Example: IP Vanish New York 1.
Now for the username and password, you’re gonna type in the email address that you used to register for your VPN account with. And then you’re gonna put in your password.
Now you have to choose an OVPN file and to get that what you’re gonna want to do is go to your VPN provider website (Ex- abc.com/software/configs). Download the OVPN file for any server you want to connect to.
And one other important item you need to download is the certificate file for the VPN. You’ll see that at the top. Download and click save. Then download the OVPN file.
The easiest way to do this since there are so many different locations within this list is hit ctrl f. You’ll notice top right corner a search box pops up. Type in location name and it highlights all the location servers. It’s easy to choose which one to download from.
Go to control panel and logging in again with your username and password. Click server list and you can look at these various entries for each server that tell you what their current capacity is. Now believe it or not in the past that has some great success by choosing the servers with high capacity.
Go back and import the first OVPN file. Click choose file and click the upload button. And you will see us as complete lack of certificate authority well. Now upload the certificate as well that we downloaded. Now you will notice the top box has now converted to a complete message. So everything looks like it has been entered successfully. Now go ahead and quickly add the other server.
Step 4 – Check your IP address
All we have to do now is click activate to turn one on. Connect server 1 and check it whether it works or not. If it works, it fine. But if it doesn’t work, re-think the step that you have done before. And correct errors that you have made. If everything works out properly you should get a blue checkbox there.
Step 5 – Test the internet speed
Open another browser for speed test. You can use fast.com for speed test. If it works properly, it’s fine. If you think your internet speed is slow, you have a few options for that. You can change server and try again. If it still slow then it might be for VPN you use or the router that you use is not high-quality. So, I suggest you use top quality and hi-end router and use PIA, IP Vanish or Nord for the best result.
